Molecular Mechanisms of Chemical Carcinogenesis

Part of the book series: Handbuch der allgemeinen Pathologie ((1712,volume 6 / 6))

Abstract

The number of chemical compounds known to cause cancer in experimental animals is large and constantly increasing. Far fewer compounds are known with reasonable certainty to be carcinogenic in man. Nevertheless the view is widely held that a high proportion of human tumours are caused by environmental chemicals. It follows, therefore, that the incidence of cancer in man could be greatly reduced by the removal of as many chemical carcinogens as possible from the environment. Unfortunately this is a formidable task and it is very unlikely that all carcinogens will be completely eliminated in the foreseeable future. For this reason, as well as for its inherent scientific interest, it is desirable to understand the mechanism of action of chemical carcinogens so that ways may be devised of preventing or reducing their carcinogenic effects on the body.
