Bone Marrow Biopsy in Malignant Lymphoma

  • Chapter

Summary

Bone marrow biopsy detects involvement of bone marrow in Hodgkin’s disease more often than aspiration does. Stage I and II patients very seldom show bone marrow involvement. In 10–50% of stage III patients, bone marrow involvement is found. These patients have to be reclassified in stage IV, where total nodular irradiation ist no longer possible. Lymphocytic depletion types are more often involved. In non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, biopsy delivers more information about bone marrow involvement than aspiration does. The difference is not as impressive as in Hodgkin’s disease. Bone marrow involvement is found mostly in stage III and IV and in the lymphocytic types. A bone marrow biopsy should be performed in all patients with stage III malignant lymphomas before laparotomy staging procedures, and in stage I and II patients if systemic symptoms are present.
