Abstract

Phenols are substances that bear at least one hydroxyl group or functional derivative of it attached to an aromatic ring system. The number and variety of the phenols make them an exceedingly important group of “secondary” plant substances. A few groups of the phenols are presented in summary form in Figure 92. Detailed structural formulae are to be found in the sections on biosynthesis.
