Abstract

The first attempts to cure cancer by immunologic means were made more than a century ago. Interest in tumor immunology has since increased, but there has been a certain degree of pessimism. Tyzzer remarked in 1916 that reviewing the literature on tumor immunology was very difficult. In 1929 Woglom included almost 1000 references in his review and in 1942, Spencer declared that the literature on tumor immunology was voluminous. However, positive results are reported much less frequently.
