Production of Capillary Pipettes

Abstract

Pyrex glass tubing (soft glass is not suitable!) of 4mm external diameter and 2 mm inner diameter, is cut into 10 cm lengths. A piece of tubing is held between thumb and first finger and held at the point of the flame of a pressure burner. (Switching-on sequence for the burner is: gas, O2, compressed air; switching-off in reverse order.) The length of the flame is adjusted to 3–4 cm as shown in Fig. 1.
