Abstract

Handprinted characters have to be rastered before processing in a digital computer. Classifications of these data give poor results without preprocessing methods. Different techniques have been tested to find out what could lead to an improvement in recognition rate with a given classification system consisting of Loève-Karhunen feature extractor and Bayes classificator. Non linear preprocessing by local operations has been investigated as well as global techniques using geometric transformations. All methods have been tested with a character set of 560 members per class. Combinations of different techniques will also be discussed.
