On the Use of Cholecystokinin in the Roentgenological Examination of the Extrahepatic Biliary Tract and Intestines

  • Chapter

Abstract

Cholecystokinin (CCK) (Jorpes and Mutt, 1954) induces contraction and emptying of the human gall bladder. The active nature of the emptying is demonstrated by the increase in intravesicular pressure both before and during evacuation. The contraction induces emptying since the increase of the gall bladder pressure exceeds the resistance of the cholecysto-cystic junction. Cholecystokinin also relaxes Oddi’s sphincter, and the sphincteric relaxation allows the lower bile and pancreatic ducts to empty. Finally, Cholecystokinin has certain motility effects on the small and large intestines.
