Summary

1.
The main factors influencing the psyche during puberty are the brain dysfunction syndrome (generally mild) due to endocrine changes, environmental reactions to the physical alterations and the new social situation.
-
2.
Psychological disturbances are frequently caused by retarded puberty. Here a psycho-social indication for hormonal treatment is very often given.
-
3.
Affective or educational frustration or chronic brain dysfunction is frequently followed by psychic disorders in puberty. The connection between puberty and schizophrenia beginning at this age is not yet understood.
-
4.
Treatment of the psychic disturbances must be adapted to the patient’s personality and milieu. Hormonal treatment with anti-androgens is sometimes needed in order to suppress socially unadapted sexual behaviour.
