Zusammenfassung
Die Bezeichnung Nickel oder „Kupfernickel“ verdankt vermutlich ihren Ursprung dem Schimpfnamen, mit dem im Mittelalter sächsische Bergleute ein dem Kupfererz ähnliches Mineral bezeichneten, das tatsächlich Nickelarsenid war, aus dem kein Kupfer gewonnen werden konnte. Die Bergleute glaubten, ein böser Geist, der „Alte Nick” habe das Erz verzaubert. Nachdem es Cronstedt im Jahre 1751 gelungen war, das Metall zu isolieren, nannte er das neuentdeckte Element Nickel. Im Jahre 1804 entwickelte Richter ein Verfahren zur Erzeugung relativ reinen Nickels, dessen Eigenschaften er studierte.
