Zusammenfassung
Zerebrale Protektion ist: „… die Anwendung zeitlich begrenzter therapeutischer Maßnahmen zum Schutz des Gehirns vor durch Ischämie oder Oligämie, bzw. Anoxie oder Hypoxie verursachte Läsionen“ [1]. Legt man den Begriff großzügig aus, wäre festzuhalten, daß eigentlich viele intensivmedizinische Maßnahmen diesem Zweck dienen, auch diejenigen, die nicht unmittelbar die Hirnfunktion schützen. Im engeren Sinne werden unter zerebraler Protektion jedoch pharmakologische Methoden verstanden, die eine Depression der elektrophysiologischen Hirntätigkeit zusammen mit einer Verminderung des metabolischen Umsatzes bewirken, um das Gehirn vor Schädigungen durch Ischämie oder andere Noxen zu bewahren. Der Nutzen der zerebralen Protektion erscheint besonders offenkundig als präventive Maßnahme, wo Störungen der Blut- und Sauerstoffversorgung des Gehirns vorhergesehen werden können.
