Abstract
In the last ten years at least three developments in ophthalmic pharmacology have prompted a fresh interest in both the mechanism of action of drugs in glaucoma and in new approaches to glaucoma therapy on the part of both pharmacologists and ophthalmologists. One is the dramatic reduction in eye pressure and aqueous inflow produced by beta adrenergic blockers, especially timolol. The second is a new emphasis on drug delivery systems and pharmacokinetics. The third is the finding, at least in the USA., of the prevalence of secondary glaucomas compared to primary glaucomas.
