Summary
Herpes virus vaccines should prevent the symptoms of primary infections and should abolish or at least reduce recurrent herpetic lesions. The present state of the development of vaccines against herpes simplex virus and other herpes group viruses is briefly reviewed and the prospects for an effective control of herpesviruses by vaccination are discussed. Recent data indicating reinfection with different virus strains in previously infected individuals resulting in herpes simplex virus latency stress the problems in controlling herpetic diseases.
