Abstract

Retinoschisis is the term used to describe a complex and heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by splitting of the sensory retina. This concept of splitting or cleavage within the sensory retina was introduced by Bartels [1] in 1933, and the term retinoschisis was first applied to this process by Wilczek [2] in 1935. Samuels and Fuchs [3] used this concise term in their English-language textbook in 1952 and the word retinoschisis has been widely employed since then.
