Abstract

It has been a dozen years, beginning with my wife’s chance observation, that I have been working in the area of pupil responses. Pupillometrics is a word that I invented to differentiate my research area from the established disciplines of pupillography and pupillometry. In simple terms we might say that pupillometrics is the study of pupil responses in interaction with psychological processes. These psychological processes include positive and negative affect states, perceptual processing, and other forms of mental activity. It ranges far beyond the classically and widely known effects of extreme fear or terror in producing a grossly dilated pupil as part of the fright reaction. While I had begun using the word psycho pupillometrics, I soon discarded it because it was so cumbersome.
