Electronic Structure of Magic Metal Clusters and Cluster Assemblies

Abstract

Compound metal clusters consisting of one or more elements could be designed to enhance their stability as well as to mimic the properties of elements in the periodic table. It is feasible to assemble these clusters into crystals with novel properties. The possibility of synthesizing cluster assembled materials with tailored properties provides a new dimension to materials science. We review some of the basic physics behind the design of stable clusters and discuss the electronic structure of crystals of such clusters.
