Abstract
During the last 20 years, there has been a remarkable increase in the use of common childhood vaccines at a global level, as a result of the efforts made by many developing countries jointly with WHO (Expanded Programme on Immunization, EPI) and UNICEF. During this period, vaccination coverage worldwide rose from less than 10% to over 80%, and it is now possible to measure the impact of this achievement in terms of reduction of disease burden. For example, the global morbidity and mortality associated with measles, pertussis, diphtheria and poliomyelitis has decreased spectacularly (Fig. 1).
