Abstract

By diffusion we mean the random, thermally activated motion of particles from site to site, often given the name of Brownian motion, after its first observer. This may be self-diffusion, as in the case of a pure liquid in which we may conceptually label one of the molecules and follow its motion over the course of time, or diffusion of one type of particle among others, such as the movement of hydrogen atoms through certain types of metal, the movement of small dust particles through still water, or the diffusion of water molecules through cell membranes. In solids self-diffusion is extremely slow because the energy barriers separating atomic sites are considerably greater than the thermal energy available, 3kT/2 per molecule.
