Zusammenfassung
In der experimentellen Elementarteilchenphysik spielt die Untersuchung der Elektron-Positron-Wechselwirkung bei hohen Energien eine herausragende Rolle. Dies erklärt sich sowohl aus theoretischen Überlegungen (sauberer Anfangszustand, einfache Reaktionsmechanismen) als auch aus der Entwicklung moderner Beschleunigeranlagen, den e + e - Speicherringen. Im wesentlichen treten bei der Elektron-Positron-Wechselwirkung folgende Prozesse auf:

a)
Die e + e - Annihilation in ein virtuelles Photon γ, das direkt anschließend in ein Fermion-Antifermion-Paar zerfällt (Abb. 1a). Da das Photon an die elektrische Ladung des Fermions f koppelt, sind die Produktionsraten für alle in der Natur vorkommenden geladenen fundamentalen Fer-mionen in gleicher Größenordnung. Einzige Voraussetzung ist, daß die Schwerpunktsenergie √s des Beschleunigers größer ist als die doppelte Fermionmasse: √s > 2mf.

b)
Resonanzen R, die in e + e - Paare zerfallen können, werden in der e + e -Annihilation produziert (Abb. 1b), wenn die Schwerpunktsenergie mit der Masse der Resonanz übereinstimmt: √s = mR. Berühmte Beispiele hierfür sind die J/Ψ-Resonanz bei 3.1 GeV und die Z 0-Resonanz bei 91 GeV.

c)
QED-Prozesse wie e + e - → γγ (Abb. 1c) ermöglichen Tests der Quantenelektrodynamik mit hoher Präzision. Eine innere Struktur des Elektrons würde sich hier bemerkbar machen.
