Abstract

Chelonians, at least a few species, have been used extensively in various physiological studies. Concerning reproductive physiology, a considerable number of descriptions of gonadal and endocrinological cycles are now available. At the same time, a large number of ecological and life history studies of chelonians have accumulated a substantial body of data on egg size, clutch size, clutch frequency and reproductive output for various species. However, little cross fertilisation appears to occur between the physiological and the life history approach. Until recently, few researchers explored the physiological control mechanisms of the allocation processes that determine the number of eggs and clutches, and the clutch frequency in species and populations.
