Abstract
In 1973, genetic engineering was born following the pioneering work of Cohen and co-workers in California, who cloned a synthetic DNA molecule into a bacterium such that the constructed molecule was passed to daughter cells. Following these initial experiments, there has been an explosion of interest in the use of recombinant DNA technology using bacteria, yeast and continuous mammalian cell lines. It is now possible to produce vaccines, hormones, cytokines, blood factors and monoclonal antibodies using developments of these pioneering techniques.
