Abstract

Although the complex dynamics of the interactions among the different components of the hematopoietic system remains poorly understood, much progress has been made in identifying the various cell types and the multitude of growth factors regulating its homeostasis. For example, the existence of pluripotent stem cells (with an infinite capacity of self-renewal), progenitor cells (with a finite capacity for self-renewal), committed stem cells (oriented toward a specific lineage differentiation) and mature cells (fully differentiated that do not divide) has been established (Fig. 13.1).
