Diffuse Panbronchiolitis and Related Diseases

Abstract

Diffuse panbronchiolitis (DPB) is a disease entity first proposed by Yamanaka et al. [1] and Honma et al. [2]. Chronic inflammation of the respiratory bronchioles is the major lesion associated with this disease [1–3]. The disease is peculiar to Japanese, and involvement of genetic or constitutional factors in its onset has been suggested [4]. DPB shows diverse pathophysiological features, such as exertional dyspnea with stridor, repeated infection of the lower airways, and marked obstructive disturbances of ventilation. A differential diagnosis of DPB is essential because the symptoms and pathophysiological features of DPB largely overlap with those of bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, and chronic pulmonary emphysema.
