Zusammenfassung

Die Tracheotomie ist eine der ältesten chirurgischen Operationen in der Medizin- Geschichte, die schon vor 3500 Jahren von Ägyptern durchgeführt wurde. Sie ist auch heute noch eine der häufigsten durchgeführten Operationen bei Intensivpatienten und ist immer dann nötig, wenn eine prolongierte Beatmung erforderlich ist. Üblicherweise wurde sie im Operationssaal unter Allgemeinanästhesie mit einer Operationstechnik durchgeführt, die sich seit der Erstbeschreibung von Jackson im Jahre 1909 kaum verändert hat. Sie wird in aller Regel über einen 4–5 cm langen vertikalen oder horizontalen Hautschnitt über dem zweiten oder dritten Trachealknorpel durchgeführt. Das subcutane Hautgewebe wird durchtrennt, gefolgt von der Separation der Halsmuskulatur sowie Identifikation und Ligatur des thyreodalen Isthmus und Ligatur der relevanten Venen. Heute wird von Laryngologen meistens ein plastisches epithelialisiertes Tracheostoma angelegt.
