Enhanced Ionization of Molecular Ions in Intense Laser Fields: Experiments on the Iodine Melecule

Abstract

Based on ultrashort laser pulse multiphoton pump-probe techniques we have observed enhanced ionization of diatomic ions in intense laser fields at a critical internuclear separation when the laser is polarized parallel to the internuclear axis. No such enhancement is observed for perpendicular polarization in agreement with recent calculations of enhanced ionization due to electron localization.
