Abstract

Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) has proved to be a valuable tool in addressing fundamental physical questions and deriving models for turbulent premixed combustion. Considering the role of DNS for the modelling of turbulent combustion the field of application of DNS methods is exposed. This paper focuses on DNS with detailed chemical reaction kinetics. Recent work on the structure of hydrogen-air and methane-air flames in turbulent flows, as well as a study of quenching of methane-air flames near a wall are presented to illustrate the applications of DNS in combustion research.
