Abstract

Two-dimensional electronic states on metal surfaces have been studied quite extensively in the past twenty years. If these surface states are confined not only perpendicular but also parallel to the surface, their dimension is further reduced — analogous to the “quantum wires” and “quantum dots” well known in semiconductor physics. Examples of two-, one- and zero-dimensional states are given.
