Precious Metal-Ceria Interactions in Car Exhaust Catalysts

  • Chapter
Surface Science

Abstract

The importance of precious metal-ceria interactions in car exhaust catalysis has been examined using steam reforming and water gas shift as test reactions. The water gas shift reaction is catalysed most effectively by rhodium and platinum, and the catalytic activity is enhanced by the presence of ceria.

Cerium dioxide was found to be hard to reduce, but the presence of 2% Rh reduced the temperature at which reduction was initiated. Reduction was found to lead to Ce(III) on the surface and, in the presence of carbon oxides, to adsorbed carbon. Re-oxidation was facile, being possible using water, carbon oxides or nitric oxide as oxidants.

Interaction of rhodium and ceria to favour the production of surface Ce(III) is found to be an important effect in controlling catalytic activity.
