Inelastic Phenomena of Low-Energy Particle-Surface Interactions

Abstract

In this contribution we summarize recent results on low-energy particle-surface interactions. By scattering under grazing incidence and detecting in specular direction we assure that we probe surface properties only. We used as incident particles hydrogen and helium as well as molecules, such as CO2. For the simple monoatomic species we present a model that explains the experimental data by accounting for the interrelation between charge exchange and stopping processes. The molecule experiments are compared to chemisorption experiments on clean and alkaline-covered surfaces.
