Abstract
Laser diodes are widely used, as they have been steadily improving in reliability, power, and wavelength coverage, while steadily decreasing in cost. One of the unique aspects of laser diodes is their modulation or pulsing capability [LENTH, 1984; TUCKER, 1985; WIEMAN et. al., 1991; TELLE, 1993; IKEGAMI et. al., 1995]. It has been shown that mono-mode laser diodes can be pulsed at frequencies up to 100 MHz and applied in the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) advantageously, if they have mono-mode emissions [DOPHEIDE et. al., 1989 & 1990 & 1993; WANG et. al., 1994a]. However, pulsed laser diodes have sometimes multi-mode emissions [SELWAY et. al., 1975; NAKAMURA et. al., 1978; STRUNCK et. al., 1992; DOPHEIDE et. al., 1993; LOCHEY et. al., 1994], and this in turn causes adjustment problems and measurement errors in LDA applications [WANG et. al., 1994b]. Up to now, only the time-averaged measurements of emission spectra over many laser pulses [DOPHEIDE et. al., 1993; WANG et. al., 1994b; LOCHEY et. al., 1994] or wavelength measurements of a single laser pulse with the pulse width of 1 us and longer [CLARK et. al., 1982] have been performed.
