Abstract
Macroscopic as well as microscopic systems are governed by the laws of quantum mechanics. The summation over the myriads of degrees of freedom characterizing a sizeable chunk of material, however, disguises the peculiar features of the quantum world and in most cases leaves us with phenomena that are in agreement with the predictions of classical physics. Experimenting with a few atoms and photons at a time, one expects that the characteristic properties of quantum mechanics must become clearly visible. The delicate measurements in this microscopic regime are confronted with the subtleties of the quantum measurement process.
