Abstract
We discuss the basic principle of experiments aimed at the detection of parity and time reversal invariance violating permanent electric dipole moments in atoms, and show that the use of paramagnetic atoms embedded in a matrix of solid 4He is a promising alternative method to conduct a highly sensitive search for such moments. The recently developped preparation technique of these samples and their optical and magnetic properties are discussed and an outlook to the anticipated sensitivity to dipole moments is given.
