Processes and equilibria between compartments

Abstract

In order to understand concentration changes in compartments and transfer of molecules from one phase (compartment) to another, it is necessary to define these compartments and the processes involved:
  • Phase or compartment: Unit of space in which molecules have a defined state of freedom (or non-freedom) of movement and reaction.

  • Processes: Reactions between molecules and transfer of molecules inside or between compartments.

  • Equilibria: Reactions and transfer processes being counterbalanced by feedback processes.
