Abstract

Although first observations of physiological properties of the otolith organs were published more than hundred years ago, clinical data, diagnostic tools, and concepts of treatment in cases of otolith diseases and involvement of otolith organ in inner ear diseases were rarely reported. Therefore, pysiological basics and aspects of otolith pathophysiology are summarized. Screening tests and quantitative diagnostic methods for evaluation of the otolith function in man are presented and compared with the literature. Clinical examples of otolith diseases are demonstrated. Actual perspectives of surgical treatment in otolith disease are discussed. First animal results of a new surgical concept, minimal-invasive selective otolith destruction by use of laser irradiation of the vestibule are presented.
