Abstract
Transport telematics serves to increase the efficiency in road use by offering information on road conditions, so as to induce behavioural changes among road users that would lead to a better capacity use. This chapter deals in greater depth with the impact of telematics on the transport behaviour of motorway users. The issue of information provision to individual road users and the aggregate results for the whole network has been studied quite intensively in the past years (e.g. for reviews see Bonsall 1992 and Emmerink et al. 1994a). We will first offer a concise overview of some findings by various authors (Section 5.2). Next, Section 5.3 of this chapter will present a case study in this field regarding VMS and RDS use in the Netherlands. In a separate Annex, we will also present empirical results from a modelling experiment.
