Abstact

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is among the most common cancer types in the western world. With the exception of Japan, it has a high incidence in the developed countries that is still rising (Vogel and McPherson 1989). In the United States of America, it accounts for approximately 150 000 new cases and about 50 000 fatalities per year (Boring et al. 1993). Despite several new treatment modalities, the prognosis depends largely on the extent of disease at the time of diagnosis. While surgery may be curative in earlier stages, about 50% of patients will suffer a relapse and die within 5 years (Fleischer et al. 1989). However, it has been demonstrated that adjuvant strategies can significantly improve survival in certain stages of CRC (Moertel et al. 1990, 1992).
