Abstract

This chapter is devoted to the mathematical definition of a group and related concepts. The examples of groups found throughout the chapter are intended to enable beginners to become acquainted with the concepts of groups. The asterisked sections (Sects. 2.7, 9–11) concern more advanced applications of group theory and may be skipped on a first reading, with the reader returning to them later as occasion arises.
