Zusammenfassung
Der (Ge-) Hirnschädel, die Schädelkapsel oder das Neurokranium umschließt das Gehirn von kranial, ventral und dorsal. Die Schädelkapsel ist abhängig in ihrem Wachstum von Größe und Wachstum des Gehirns, d. h. der Hirnschädel wächst vor allem pränatal und im ersten Lebensjahr bzw. den ersten Lebensjahren, wie unschwer aus einer Kopfumfangskurve abgelesen werden kann. Wichtige Abgrenzungspunkte sind in der Medianebene nach ventral (Gesichtsschädel) zu das Nasion, die Einziehung unterhalb der Glabella zwischen den beiden Orbitae, sowie nach dorsal zu (Schädelbasis) das Inion, der Spitze der Protuberantia occipitalis externa; das Opisthion an der dorsalen Begrenzung des Foramen occipitale magnum und das Basion an seinem ventralen Rand grenzen die Schädelkapsel gegenüber der übrigen Schädelbasis ab.
