Ecological Economics and Environmental Policies: A European View

The difficulties of using conventional economic theories in promoting environmental protection are discussed in this chapter. Several indicators of environmental health are described and their limitations and implications presented, besides highlighting the problems of internalization of externalities. The difficulties of applying the notions of carrying capacity and sustainability are explained and the advantage of the concept of ecological economics is provided and the political aspects of the problem governing international trade policies are discussed. In the end, certain suggestions in the context of ecologically correcting the price system based on bottom up policies and European Agricultural policy are also presented.
