Abstract

The school system of the Federal Republic of Germany differs from that in the Anglo-American world in the way it is structured, offering as one characteristic feature the Gymnasium. To be able to understand the Gymnasium with its specific tasks as part of the entire school system, the organization of this system and the different types of-schools with the tasks and objectives assigned to them have to be illustrated so that from the overall picture the specific task of the Gymnasium and its educational mandate can be derived.

The general educational mandate will be illustrated as well as how general technology education is dealt with in the final years Gymnasium (or senior high-school), reference being made to syllabus and the methodology applied. The dividing line but also the links existing in this context between Gymnasium and the wide-ranging and comprehensive technology education as part of vocational training will be shown. Another aspect is how at this school level the connection is with regard to contents and methodology established between technology as a subject with the metascience of ‘general technology’ and technology as a science. This science-related theoretical basis justifies the technical orientation of the course system in the senior grades of a Gymnasium. In conclusion, an example is to illustrate how the objectives of technology education outlined are translated into actual teaching at the Gymnasium.
