Abstract
On September 15, 1955, Helga Noll set foot for the first time on the American continent. This was in Montreal, Canada, where she arrived with her husband on board the freighter “Prins Frederik Henrik”. From Montreal they made a long bus trip to Los Angeles. On the way, they lodged for one night at the house of Clifford Truesdell in Bloomington. In Los Angeles, the Nolls rented a small furnished flat, found through the University of Southern California [4.1]. On their first day in it they had to do without electricity. They had to wait for about a month for the container with their possessions to arrive from Germany. The lodging soon proved to be very noisy and Walter Noll could hardly concentrate on his work at home in the morning hours. Having saved enough money, the Nolls moved to another flat which was modern and had new furniture [4.2]. Helga Noll, who didn’t want to become a housewife, found a job as a salesperson [4.3].
