Abstract
For domains such as interpersonal messaging, office communication, or teleconferencing, adequate multimedia and hypermedia teleservices have been introduced recently. While such teleservices are primarily focused on the data interchange aspect, a teleservice Multimedia Archive provides more comprehensive support for networked hypermedia applications. It serves as a backbone component for networked hypermedia applications addressing domains such as advertisement, entertainment, infotaintment, teleeducation, teletraining, teleshopping, and other forthcoming applications. In comparison to similar internet services such as, e.g., world wide web, gopher, newsgroups, important issues like safety, security, accounting, and billing are properly handled at the level of the teleservice itself and not by complementing application code. A proposal for a general architecture which can be characterized as a globally accessible multimedia archive is described in this paper. We also comprehensively discuss a concrete application example that shows a multimedia calendar of events and describe how it can be turned into a fully productive system. We are especially taking into account that the necessary infrastructure is only becoming available incrementally.
