Subcritical Disturbance Growth Caused by Hairpin Eddies

Part of the book series: IUTAM Symposia ((IUTAM))

Summary

In order to clarify the mechanism of wall turbulence generation as well as the related critical flow condition, we have been working on the subcritical boundary layer transition triggered by high-intensity hairpin eddies. In this paper, we present our recent results on the subcritical disturbance growth leading to wall turbulence, obtained by periodically exciting hairpin eddies through a small wall orifice. The minimum Reynolds number for the disturbance growth due to regeneration of hairpin eddies is found to be about 130 ∼ 150 (based on the momentum thickness). Even when the energetic hairpin eddies are introduced, however, the regeneration of the hairpin eddies occurs only along a narrow strip (extending downstream from the orifice) at the subcritical Reynolds numbers.
