Bedeutung von Vitamin A für Lungenentwicklung und Funktion

Zusammenfassung

Vitamin A ist für Wachstum und Entwicklung verschiedenster Zellen und Gewebe von essentieller Bedeutung. Als Ligand für Retinsäurerezeptoren (RAR, RXR) steuert es die regelrechte Differenzierung einer Reihe von Zellen und ist in die Integration von Zellverbänden involviert (Morré 1992; Kurokawa et al. 1994). Besonders am Respirationsepithel und der Lunge spielt Vitamin A eine wesentliche Rolle. So ist im mäßigen Vitamin-A-Mangel die Inzidenz für Erkrankungen des Respirationstraktes erheblich erhöht und rezidivierende respiratorische Infekte lassen sich mit moderater Vitamin-A-Supplementierung therapeutisch beeinflussen (Pinnock u. Bad-cock, 1986; Sommer 1993; West et al. 1991). Neben der Bedeutung des Vitamins für die Lungenfunktion ist Vitamin A auch für die Entwicklung vieler Gewebe und Zellen wichtig. So steuert es die Morphogenese der Extremitäten ebenso wie die Entwicklung der embryonalen Lunge. Diese Steuerung erfolgt, wie jüngste Untersuchungen belegen, sowohl durch unterschiedliche Expressionen von Retinoidrezeptoren als auch durch zeitabhängige Veränderungen des Vitamin-A-Stoffwechsels.
