Superconductivity in fullerenes: buckyballs

Abstract

The molecular orbits on a buckyball, C 60, are studied analytically. It is found that the LUMO level and the second LUMO level form a closely spaced parity doublet. The implications of this parity doublet on the polarizability of C 60 ions and the superconductivity pairing mechanism of the alkali doped C 60 crystals are analyzed.
