Free clusters of copper atoms: a study of structural size effects

Abstract

The structures of unsupported ultrafine Cu particles produced by the inert-gas-aggregation technique, have been studied by 100 keV electron diffraction. Model diffraction patterns have been fitted to the data, using a simulated annealing scheme, The results show the coexistence of icosahedra and decahedra, below ~ 4 nm, and agree with recent molecular dynamics calculations. A slight expansion of the mean Cu-Cu distance is found.
