A Definition of Cytolytic Responses in Invertebrates

  • Chapter
Invertebrate Immune Responses

Part of the book series: Advances in Comparative and Environmental Physiology ((COMPARATIVE,volume 23))

Abstract

Invertebrates, like vertebrates, constitute a wide heterogeneous group continuously confronted by the necessity to maintain their integrity. Although the survival strategies developed by the two groups are similar, the processes of neutralization and elimination of foreign invaders are not based on the same effectors. A multiplicity of factors that act against microorganisms, foreign cells or abiotic material are part of the humoral repertoire of invertebrate defense systems. Many of these factors are naturally occurring, representing innate mechanisms. However, new types of molecules can be elicited in response to invasion (Boman and Hultmark 1987), suggesting the existence of an invertebrate “acquired” immunity. For example, antibacterial activities, not due to lysozyme, are found in invertebrate fluids. In insects, the phylum in which the studies are the most developed, numerous antibacterial peptides are well known; some of them, such as the defensins and cecropins, have counterparts in both insects and mammals (Eisenhauer et al. 1989; Lee et al. 1989).

The original chapter was to have been c0-authored with Calogero Canicatti (University of Lecce-Italy). He died suddenly at the age of 42, on January 8, 1993. This chapter honors his memory as a very close friend and enthusiastic colleague.
