Abstract
Deserts are not always characterized by great heat and extensive sand dunes. A variety of biotopes and temperature regimes are found in temperate and subtropical deserts and extremely low temperatures are typical for polar deserts. As pointed out by Logan (1968), an important common characteristic of all deserts is their aridity.
