Abstract

Communication in many application areas, such as cooperative applications, kiosking systems, and software update systems, includes multiparty file transfer between one origin and a group of targets. The paper describes the Multiparty File Transfer Protocol (Multiparty FTP) which supports multiparty file transfer in internets. It provides a group abstraction, realizing transparency from the address, from individual responses, and from failures of single targets involved in the transfer. To optimize its performance, Multiparty FTP has been realized on top of the Internet Stream Protocol, Version 2 (ST-II), which provides a connection-oriented multicast service and therefore contributes to an increased throughput and a reduced network load. Multiparty FTP applies a highly efficient selective repeat retransmission protocol, which is tailored to the characteristics of multiparty file transfer and which takes advantage of the guaranteed data rates in ST-II. Protocol design rationals are discussed and results of performance measurements are presented.
