Interaction of liposomes with cells in vitro

Trafficking of Intracellular Membranes:

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIH,volume 91))

Abstract

The use of liposomes as model membranes has made significant contributions to our understanding and current knowledge of lipid bilayers and their interaction with various proteins (McConnell, 1983; Papahadjopoulos, et al., 1990). However, the potential use of liposomes as carriers of drugs and macromolecules, has taken much longer than expected to reach a successful conclusion in terms of clinical applications. One of the key problems in using liposomes as carriers is the lack of understanding about the parameters that control the interaction of liposomes with cells.
