Critical Loads of Acidity to Streamwaters in the Vosges Mountains: Biological Criteria

The Vosges mountains (North-East France) have been exposed to acid precipitation since the beginning of the industrialized era (Kreiser et al. 1995) but it is only recently that the existence of acidified streams became apparent (Massabuau et al. 1987). Subsequently, a preliminary overview of extent and location of the surface water acidification in the massif was reported by Probst et al. (1990): 15 acidified and fishless streams among 39 sampled streams were discovered. More recently, in an exhaustive survey of 600 Vosges mountain streams, Party et al. (1993) detected 53 acidified streams (pH≤5.6).
